There was something in the air last night. Oh, I know what it was! It was tons of beer cups being flung at the stage. Indeed, The Rakes, Towers of London, Boy Kill Boy, and Plan B show at the Bowery Ballroom was totally nuts. The show was being films for MTV UK and they definitely captured a rowdy New York City show, even though approximately 82% of the crowd had sweet British accents.
While the Towers of London with they were D Generation or early Manic Street Preachers, they come off like Poison (circa CC Deville with the pink hair) or The Darkness (circa yesterday). It was utter shit hair-metal-pop-rock. The lead guitarist did his constant imitation of Slash. The singer was an even uglier version of Justin Darkness and the drummer was covered in white powder and hair spray. During the last two songs of their set, some dude at the front right of the stage kept screaming, "You fucking suck." and giving the band the finger. The singer from Towers of London ignored him between songs, but as they ended their set thing heated up. This guy kept egging the band on and the singer trying to kick him from the stage. Then he kicked the mic stand at him, but instead hit a girl in the face and cut her eye open. The singer then jumped into the crowd oblivious to the fact that he just injured some innocent bystanders, and went face to face with the dude,He inviting him backstage for a brawl, which the dude declined. Security immediate stepped in and escorted the singer backstage before turning their attention towards the girl who was hurt.
After a little intermission, The Rakes took the stage and the rowdy crowd turned into a very excitable crowd. Full on pogoing from start to finish, while singer Alan Donohoe did his best Ian Curtis dance moves. Even though The Rakes were being so well received, the beer cups kept on flying, with one hitting Alan right in the chest. Luckily, he didn't blink an eye and kept on playing.
The Rakes came off as a way more confident band than they did when they played Brooklyn's North Six during the last CMJ Music Festival. It was an impressive and lively set that ended with a very excited girl climbing onto the stage. She looked so happy as she launched herself back into the pogoing crowd and I truly felt sorry that no one caught her as she did a total belly flop. It was like that scene from PCU. Oh well..........
