THE CLOUD ROOM | Mercury Lounge Review
The Cloud Room played a sold out show yesterday at the Mercury Lounge with Film School and The Big Sleep. The Cloud is best know for their 2005 summer jam "Hey Now Now," a surprisingly simple but catchy song where the lyrics, although slightly dark, become a playful rhythmic element. The Cloud Room's other songs are also built around rhythm using precise drums and pulsating synths—both were on point at the show. The band is an easy listen with the addition of sunshine pop guitar and equally warm vocals to the upbeat rhythm. While the lyrics are sometimes esoteric, on the surface they maintain their pop sheen through the richness of J's voice. The songs "Blackout!" and "Beautiful Mess" stirred much more reaction from the crowd than "Hey Now Now." The band also played a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Who Loves the Sun."
Set list:
Sunlight Song / Blackout! / Devoured In Peace / Waterfall / Sleep / Eleanor / Beautiful Mess / Hey Now Now / Lord // Who Loves The Sun / Follow Me
Film School still rocked despite the mishap of their gear getting
stolen earlier this week. This was their first show since "it"
happened. Lots of people helped out to get them new gear for the show.
They are back at the Mercury Lounge tonight if you want to check them
out.
Set list:
On / Pit / Deep / Ms / Breet / Sick / Like / 11:11
The Big Sleep played a great set of captivating instrumental rock music with lots of distortion and feedback. The trio is really good at shifting the focal instrument as their songs progress. Sometimes you are hearing the guitar/synth in the foreground, sometimes its the bass, sometimes its the drums, other times its just distortion.
No set list but they played a lot of songs that are available for free on their website.
More photos of Film School and The Big Sleep after the jump.

aggggh I was supposed to see this show in Providence but when I heard that FS had cancelled (which was the primary draw for me), I gave up and went to The Boy Least Likely To in Boston, which was likely a better show. I don't even know if the Cloud Room played in Prov. on Thursday.
