Jose Gonzalez played his first show in New York at Joe’s Pub last night. On stage there were three microphones: one positioned for his subdued vocals, one aimed toward the mouth of his classical guitar, and the other sat on the floor, propped on a folded black glove, to capture his foot tapping. When the show started the first microphone was way too quiet for Jose’s calm and gentle voice. Joe’s Pub isn’t the type of place where you shout out “turn up the vocals,” but thankfully he made this request about three songs into the set. It is a delicate trick, because without the mic, the intimacy of his vocals would be drowned by his guitar. Jose’s dexterous finger plucking creates a full sound of interlocking melodies that were sometimes accompanied by rhythmic thuds and knocks on the body of the guitar. He played a good mix of his original songs and covers that he makes his own. The crowd was also extremely quiet and still during songs but cheered a lot in between them.
Set list:
Not What It Seems / As Soon As The Storm Is Over / Slow Moves / All You Deliver / Stay In The Shade / Lovestain / Broken Arrows / Instrumental / Heartbeats / Hints / Crosses / Love Will Tear Us Apart / Deadweight on Velveteen // Hand on Your Heart / Teardrop

Does anyone have the setlist for the later show?
