How can you not admire Zwigoff's balls in making a film that starts out like art school American Pie and then becomes a weird art film? Reviewers who say that the movie spins out into unbelievable are totally missing the point. Maybe you have to be a fan of Dan Clowes's comics, which are filled with unanswered plot questions, bizarre true crime plot twists and surreal "happy" endings to get this movie. Art School Confidential, which was inspired and fleshed out from a 4 page comic from a long ago Eightball, is about loneliness, the elusive meaning of art and success and the unrequited love for an unobtainable woman with a perfect ass (a theme in Clowes's work).
Interesting geek note: Clowes lovers will note that ASC protagonist Jerome attends Strathmore, the college that Ghost World's Enid nearly attended. What if they'd met? Fuck it, they probably would have hated each other.
In closing, Art School Confidential is fucking funny, totally biting, silly at times, dead-on at others. A must see for former film school students, MFA wannabes, and sensitive losers everywhere.
Check out this 10 second Eightball trailer. I don't know what it's for, but damn, Dan Clowes is fucking cool.
